Daily Glean: Potatoes & Oranges
Today when I swung by my usual source of gleanings, I found bags and bags of oranges and potatoes. Both of these products are sold in large bags: the oranges in 5lb bags, the large potatoes in 10lb bags, the small potatoes (which I forgot to photograph until I was already cooking them for dinner) were in 3lb bags. While the larger bags are usually a better deal for shoppers, they also get thrown away in quantity because if one individual in the bag goes bad, the whole bag gets culled. The stores with more staff may have someone open the bags and sell the remaining good product individually, but often this isn't worth the labor cost. Hence, I was able to rescue a 3lb bag of mini potatoes (2 potatoes had gone mushy), a 10lb bag of the big potatoes (as shown in the photo, one potato has an open face that turned gray- not even moldy, just unsightly), and what amounts to about 6lbs of oranges.

Estimated market value:
-Baby Potatoes, 3 lb bag: $1.50
-White Potatoes, 10 lb bag: $2
-Oranges, 6lbs: $7
